MOUNT POCONO, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — The recent storms slamming our area have been impacting a number of community outdoor events.

28/22 News stopped by a summertime staple in the Poconos and has more on how the group behind it isn’t letting rain dampen the fun.

The fun slide lights still shine bright, despite a foggy Tuesday morning in Mount Pocono.

The ride is one of dozens, all part of the Pocono Mountain Carnival that kicked off Monday, but had a rainy start.

"People still came out and had a good time. It was a decent crowd given the weather," said carnival chairman, and part of the Pocono Mountain Volunteer Fire Company, Randy Altemose.

Altemose tells 28/22 News that the annual event happens rain or shine, and they’re honoring Monday night's one-ticket ride promotion into day two.

In its 99th year, he says a little weather doesn’t stop the generations of families taking part.

"We’ve had people call up asking when it was because they wanted to plan their vacations around the week of carnival so they can come out," said Altemose.

When coming to the annual carnival, you may leave with a prize such as a fish, but no matter what, you’re helping your local volunteer fire company.

All the money goes to support the Pocono Mountain Volunteer Fire Company, an organization that just marked a century in operation.

This event is its largest fundraiser, keeping its doors open to serve the community.

"It allows us to buy equipment, buy trucks, buy gear, and keep our volunteers safe," explained Altemose.

Running through Sunday, tricky trays, live music, and more will fill in under the big tent, Altemose says, togetherness is much needed.

"Have fun and enjoy yourself, and you know it’s maybe something that, in general something society needs to get back to, that sense of community," said Altemose.

The 99th annual Pocono Mountain Carnival will open for day two, rain or shine, Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
