TANNERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Florists are seeing price increases tied to tariffs, and with Mother's Day this weekend, shoppers may get sticker shock.
28/22 News stopped by one flower shop in Monroe County to find out how they are handling the higher price tag.
With her newborn daughter strapped to her chest, Ally Gouny works around the clock to fulfill orders inside her shop, Imaginations, Florals & More by Ally.
“Prom always tends to fall on Mother’s Day (Weekend), so it gets quite hectic in here,” said Gouny.
The busy time of year sends customers to floral shops nationwide, but many like this one in Tannersville are also seeing an uptick in costs.
Celebrating Cinco De Mayo in Wilkes-Barre Township“The tariffs have caused an increase on our product, floral-wise, supply-wise, and we even have an increase delivery charge and also fuel surcharge on our product,” explained Gouny.
With many of her flowers shipped from Canada, Colombia, and Ecuador. The 10% tariff on imports is trickling down to her small business and its consumers.
For example, spray roses last year cost $9.99 with the wholesale provider. This year, they’ve gone up to $20.99.
“Right now, some of the roses are six to seven dollars a stem in retail value, you know so we really have to be transparent about that, especially for people who want like a dozen roses or two dozen roses,” said Gouny.
Being a local family-owned shop, Gouny says they take pride in being honest about the higher price tag with their customers, going as far as ordering tariff-free items such as flowering stock and statice flowers to be budget-friendly.
“We’ll use a lower-costing vase, lower-costing greenery to kind of make up for not having to be too high in comparison to last year,” explained Gouny.
The flower shop is operating under extended hours due to both Mother's Day and prom season.
