STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— It is the time of year when raccoon babies are typically found in the wild.
Officials at the Pocono Wildlife Center already have several litters that have been brought in due to a missing mother or saved from being eliminated by pest control.
They say they cannot house anymore raccoons because they hit their limit at 100, but they are still able to accept other animals.
A canceled wedding turns into a community eventOfficials say they need the communities assistance to make sure they are all taken care of.
"We need assistance currently with donations towards the care of our raccoons. So as you can see behind me, we have just two of the several letters that we've already received within the past month of the start of baby season. Each raccoon cost about $700-$1000 per raccoon to take care of, for food, for vaccinations, for formula," explained Ella Irwin, clinic manager.
The Pocono Wildlife Center want the public to know what to do in the event they come into contact with raccoons.
They say the way to keep a raccoon mother and litter away from human areas humanely, besides calling a local wildlife center, is to spray coyote scent in the area, play loud music or male raccoon sounds or strobe lights.
