Eating up the Super Bowl

The 2025 Super Bowl between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs is only days away.  There will be parties held all over the country to watch this favorited event and the food is just as important as the game. Is your menu ready?  Different foods define a party.  A various selection of Stroudsburg students listed the one food that defines their Super Bowl party. A poll of ten students found that three students preferred wings, three students preferred nachos, and four students preferred other foods.  Chicken wings have been a popular sports food. In a poll from The Poultry Federation, it is estimated that Americans will consume about 1.47 billion chicken wings for the upcoming Super Bowl.

January School Board Update

While the board meetings have died down in activity since the last update, a few new additions are on the horizon. Two new courses were approved by the board, those being Minority Voices in America and Principles of Engineering. Minority Voices of America strives to explore the works of various minority writers throughout history.   The Principles of  Engineering course explores the ways in which modern engineers improve our lives. In addition, they will learn to use a few of the tools that the aforementioned engineers utilize. There were also three finalized retirements at the board meeting. The French teacher and NHS advisor, Mrs. Verwey, and English teacher, Mrs. Griswold, are both retiring at the end of the school year. That’s all there is to report for the January 2025 school board meeting.

Punxsutawney Phil has some competition

On February 2, 2025, Punxsutawney Phil made his prediction for six more weeks of winter, but don’t fret, he only has a 30 percent accuracy. Phil has been predicting whether for 137 years, how has he been predicting our seasons wrong for over a century? Well, he is not the only groundhog making predictions. Across the nation, many groundhogs have been predicting weather, but none as long as Punxsutawney Phil. In New York, Staten Island Chuck contradicted Phil’s prediction, with spring coming early. Chuck has been making predictions since 1981, and his accuracy is 85 percent– much higher than Phil’s.

Keeping People Safe From Hazardous Spills

Hazardous spills can happen at any moment. And they can be deadly, especially if first responders don’t know what they’re handling. Luckily a group in Monroe County is dedicated to keeping track of those potential dangers and reducing risks. Do you know what this placard means on the back of a truck? You may have never noticed one but it’s the only positive result of the 1964 explosion in Marshalls Creek. Three volunteer firefighters and three bystanders were killed by an unmarked truck that caught fire on Route 209.  Monroe County Emergency Management Director Maryellen Keegan says, "Understanding what was driving through and housed within the communities is important so that people aren’t walking into situations that could be harmful or not be able to make the decisions needed during an emergency."
