Pocono Mountain School District Student Information Exposed in Cybersecurity Breach
Pocono Mountain School District (PMSD) has announced that it was informed of a cybersecurity breach involving its third-party vendor, PowerSchool, on January 8, 2025. PowerSchool, a widely used student information database provider serving over 18,000 school organizations across the United States, reported the breach and has launched a forensic audit to determine the extent of the damage. At this time, PMSD officials have not confirmed whether any specific student data was accessed or compromised. However, PowerSchool has assured the district that measures are being taken to investigate the breach thoroughly.PMSD officials emphasized that their student information system relies on student identification numbers, not Social Security numbers, which minimizes the potential for sensitive personal data exposure.
East Stroudsburg’s Tax Hike Crisis: Time to Hold Tax-Exempt Properties Accountable
East Stroudsburg seems determined to burden its residents with a staggering 29% property tax hike—one councilwoman even proposed raising it to 40%. It’s as though this borough has never met a property tax it didn’t like.At the December 2024 East Stroudsburg Council meeting, residents were presented with a dog-and-pony show about the “proposed” budget. Yet, amidst all the talk, no one suggested addressing the borough’s growing fiscal crisis by holding tax-exempt properties accountable. Properties such as hospitals, East Stroudsburg University, government buildings, and other so-called nonprofit or for-profit operations collectively account for over $3 billion in tax-exempt value. Instead of seeking contributions from these entities, the council seems content to push hard-working residents to the brink.
