Route 611 in Delaware Water Gap reopens after nearly 2 years

It’s only 2,700 feet of fresh pavement, but for people and businesses on either side of the Delaware Water Gap, it’s a lifeline. On Tuesday morning, PennDOT will remove what seemed to be permanent “road closed” signs across Route 611, and the important link between the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos will be open to traffic for the first time in nearly two years. “I’m happy, and the local people are happy about it,” said Nicolay Mazhirov, who owns Alexandra and Nicolay Chocolate, an artisan candy store in Portland, near the south end of the detour. “Unfortunately, it took a really long time. We don’t understand. Was it a case of bureaucracy or was it undoable for two years?”

Stroudsburg Chess team begins a new era doubling in size

The Stroudsburg Varsity Chess Club is preparing to begin the 2024-2025 season and is looking to improve from the 2023-2024 season. Last year, Stroudsburg began a rebuilding year after losing many of its top members. Fortunately for them, it seems the rebuild will end sooner than expected. The team has shown tremendous signs of growth from last year and is looking to be competitive this year. The team is led by Jacob Bajek, ’25, and has gained many new members who are making an impact. The club has almost doubled in members from the previous year and they have been working diligently. Sherie Stauffer, the head coach of the team, stated, “We have many more people interested in the team as well as the club. Many of the tenth graders played chess in junior high, so they were ready for the competition. Now our placement games will take longer than last year and these players are challenging the older teammates”.

Staff Feature on Ms.Jennings Elementary school nurse

At which school in the district do you work? I currently work at Hamilton Elementary. How long have you been working at SASD? I have worked at SASD for 18 years! If you had gone into another profession, what would it be and why? I think I would make a great detective or a lawyer because I like trying to uncover the truth, fighting for what is right, and having a good argument! :) What is one piece of advice you would share with your students? Be true to yourself. There will always be struggles, but the rewards will be greater. You got this! If you could have one superpower what would it be and why? Invisibility for sure! What could be better than being invincible?!?! I would have so much fun!
