WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Rep. Susan Wild joined House Committee on Education and the Workforce Ranking Member Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03) and Rep. Susie Lee (NV-03) in reintroducing the Direct Creation, Advancement, and Retention of Employment (CARE) Opportunity Act of 2023. The legislation invests more than $1.8 billion over five years in training and increasing opportunities for our nation’s direct care workers.

Three ESU professors and two graduate students are participating in a two-year grant project funded by the Bureau of Family Health, a subsidiary of Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH), that focuses on promoting the safety and well-being of children and reducing preventable childhood fatalities. Clare Lenhart, Ph.D., associate professor of public health, Christine Fisher, Ph.D., associate professor of health studies, and Kelly Varcoe, D.N.P., assistant professor of nursing, along with Kamya Edmonds and Taylor Rau, graduate students in public health, represent ESU on a Child Death Review (CDR) Program Team. There are 61 CDR Teams across the commonwealth.

WASHINGTON, DC – Following today’s vote on the FY24 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a bill to address American national security that has historically been overwhelmingly bipartisan, Congresswoman Susan Wild released the following statement: “As one of the most bipartisan members of Congress, I have engaged in compromise across the aisle and voted to pass the NDAA each year since my first term to fund our military, address the needs of our servicemembers, and protect our national security. However, this year’s bill is nothing like those—it was hijacked by an extreme faction of the GOP that is intent on pursuing their goal of banning abortion nationwide and playing politics with our national security.

Emergency Funding Requires Emergency Action The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and I secured $3.5 million in emergency funding in January and we have been working diligently behind the scenes to acquire the necessary permits and specialized labor to address the safety concerns on Route 611 – which has been closed since December due to rockslides. The goal is to reopen this critical roadway for motorists, even just to one lane. PennDOT has been working expeditiously to obtain the required permits from the National Park Service. The state is prepared to move forward with the necessary work – we can activate a crew in 3-4 days. We need the national park service to feel the same urgency we do at the state and local level.

The East Stroudsburg University Foundation announced it has received a $38,300 grant from the Weiler Family Foundation, based in Cresco, Pa. These funds will support the purchase of new medical equipment for the ESU Communication and Sciences Disorders Department. The grant award will allow the department to update the equipment for the ESU Speech and Hearing Clinic. With the necessary medical equipment to serve clients, students can apply what they are learning in the classroom while serving the community. Students will gain field experience fulfilling clinical hours required for licensure and certification by performing hearing screenings for at-risk children and educating and evaluating older adults for swallowing disorders (dysphagia).

A month ago, we told you about a golden eagle recovering at an animal shelter in Monroe County. The bird was missing a foot. The eagle seemed fine otherwise. Here’s what the facility’s executive director told us then. “When we first looked at the foot, I was almost in disbelief that something could have healed that well. No infection, no necrosis. It completely healed over,” said Janine Tancredi, the Wilderz at Pocono Wildlife.
