East Stroudsburg University alumnus Colonel (Retired) U.S. Army George R. Fields, Jr. ’83 was appointed as a new member of the East Stroudsburg Foundation Board of Directors during the board’s quarterly meeting held on August 17, 2023. Fields is a Senior Army Instructor at Creekside High School in Fairburn, Ga. He served in the U.S. Army for over 25 years and received the Bronze Star Medal for his service. Fields’ term began on July 1, 2023. “On behalf of the ESU Foundation Board of Directors, I wish to express our gratitude to George Fields, Jr. for agreeing to serve in this important role. I am confident that he will help us continue our work in fulfilling the Foundation’s mission,” said Adam Stauffer ’00 M’02, ESU Foundation Board Chairman.

As we take a look at what’s new in area school districts this year, Pocono Mountain is focusing on parent-teacher communication, especially when it comes to its elementary students. News13’S Nicole Walters shares how technology is helping to make that connection in this report. School is back in session for teachers at Swiftwater Elementary Center. They’re busy putting the finishing touches on their classrooms today to welcome students back on Monday. And we’re told there’s going to be a lot more new faces than in years past. Swiftwater Elementary Center Reading Specialist Melissa Hoban says, "So we not only have the returning students from Kindergarten through third grade, but we also have a lot of new students coming in, coming back from cyber schools and coming from other schools as well.  So it’s super exciting."

Gouger says, "It shows you how to build a work ethic and some kids don’t get to experience that, but farming and cows, and all of that kind of stuff makes you work hard and gets you where you want to be in life." EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The trial for Bryan Kohberger is now delayed indefinitely. The Monroe County native appeared in an Idaho courtroom Wednesday. Kohberger was set to stand trial on October 2, but that was put on pause Wednesday afternoon after he waived his right to a speedy trial. The decision had been anticipated for weeks, ever since prosecutors announced they would seek the death penalty in the case. Making connections is the mission of the Tobyhanna Army Depot's Industry Day. Businesses are invited to the depot and learn how they can be involved in the opportunities Tobyhanna Army-Depot has to offer. "Working with the government can be a very challenging process it's a unique process, we want to educate them on that so that they know what websites they have to go to, what the process is, but most importantly who they can contact here to support them," says Kristyn Smith the chief of staff at Tobyhanna Army Depot. Through various briefings, presentations, and industrial tours, each company can learn if they are a good fit for the base.

Former Chief Robert "Bob" James LaBar, 77, of Cresco, PA passed away Monday August 21, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Bob was born in East Stroudsburg, PA to Charles W. LaBar and Linnie (Bradford) LaBar. Along with his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Jane Boise. Bob was the loving husband of Mabel "May" (Harrison) LaBar, to whom he was married for 55 years, although he claims he received a year off for good behavior. Along with May, he is survived by his siblings, Charles L. LaBar and wife Marlene, and Ann Chopek; children Christopher R. Harrison and wife Susan, and Joshua LaBar; grandchildren Edward R. Harrison, and Rebecca M.

MIDDLE SMITHFIELD TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — State police say they arrested a man after he chased and shot at another man in Monroe County. According to Pennsylvania State Police, on August 6 troopers were called to a shooting incident at My Place Bar & Grill in Middle Smithfield Township around 1:30 a.m. After further investigation, PSP said a man, later identified as Jose Ramos, 39, of Stroudsburg, chased a 30-year-old man with a gun and then fired one round at the victim. Man arrested for allegedly possessing stolen gun in Luzerne County An arrest warrant was issued and Ramos was taken into custody at Monroe County Correctional Facility.
