Chamber Players of Tempesta di Mare to Perform at Beacon Hill

Announcing two Beacon Hill Concerts—one instrumental, one vocal— by the Chamber Players of Tempesta di Mare (All the artists are principal players/performers with the Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra) Sunday, December 3, 2023, 3:00 pm, “UNMATCHED” – six players, six wind and string instruments – flute, recorder, oboe, bassoon, violin, lute, and harpsichord in many combinations. The instruments blend and contrast, call and respond, stand out as soloists, and form a cohesive whole. The program starts with a concerto by Vivaldi followed by works of other baroque composers: Telemann, and lesser-known Zelenka, Janitsch, Fasch, and Boismortier.

What's New in Pleasant Valley School District

NEWS 13 is taking a look at what's new in area school districts this year... and the Pleasant Valley school district is implementing something new as news 13's Ameenah Thompson tells us they're giving students a chance to be more vocal about what they need. Superintendent James Konrad says, "We do have a new student information system called Power School so one of the big lifts for our community is just to make sure that they're creating the accounts to access all this digital information." Superintendent James Konrad tells us families will have access to grades, attendance and behavior he says they also changed their bus system. Konrad says, "PVE the elementary school and then also PVI the intermediate school and so we have students in grades K through 5 on the same buses." He says that reduces costs for transportation.

What's New East Stroudsburg Back to School Prep

As the new school year approaches East Stroudsburg school district is implementing something new. They're helping students get a jump start on their college education. As News 13's Ameenah Thompson tells us they're helping students get a jump start on their college education. Matthew Trioli Principal here at East Stroudsburg says, "So what we're doing for our students this year is we're offering two programs one is dual credit, dual credit program is when you would take a class whether its through East Stroudsburg University or Northampton community college it would count towards they would get a college credit for it." South principal triolo says it would go on their college transcripts and then on their high school transcript it would count towards one of their required electives.

Summer Fun SkyDiving

They say you should do one thing that scares you at least one time and News 13's Ameenah Thompson did just that, as she jumped out of a plane for this week's summer fun idea. George there's many ways to see the Poconos but ten thousand feet up may be the best way yet. Co-Owner at Pegasus Skydive Center says "It's super easy a lot of people call us actually and they say hey what kind of training do I have to do it's actually super simple as you may have seen you come here we tell you exactly what to do you're instructors there to do everything for you in case you forget everything that you forgot that you were supposed to do its relatively safe ish we like to say the equipment has come a long way since the 80's or so when they invented Tandem parachuting."

Meals on Wheels in need of donations, volunteers

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — For more than 50 years Monroe County Meals on Wheels has provided food and services to hundreds of people in the Poconos. Monroe County Meals on Wheels in Stroudsburg is seeing a staggering uptick in clients who need their services as they just surpassed helping more than 350 people every week. “We’re all affected by the increase in cost and things like that, but it could be as simple as somebody has an aging parent and they don’t live in the state,” said Stacey Koeck the special events coordinator for Monroe County Meals on Wheels. August is always a busy month for the nonprofit as they use it to spread awareness for its donation drives where several townships are collecting household essentials for its clients as well as public libraries collecting pet food donations through the end of the month.

Monroe County West End Fair kicks off

GILBERT, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Summer fairs are always packed with diverse activities and attractions. A week-long fair in Monroe County goes beyond cotton candy and carnival rides. Thrilling rides, carnival bites, and endless entertainment line more than 90-plus acres of the West End fairgrounds for seven whole days. Live music from singers like Chris Eckert, dancing, and cheerleading performances on stage even barns full of livestock. "They're not only our neighbors or friends, but we are one big family here," said Mindy Seese from Reeders. Sunday kicked off the first day of the week-long fair that runs through Saturday, August 26.

Warrant issued, woman sends police on high-speed chase

POCONO TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Officers have issued an arrest warrant for a woman in Monroe County after she sends officers on a high-speed chase. According to Pocono Township Police Department on August 19 around 9:50 a.m., officers conducted a traffic stop on a white Tesla SUV with an expired and suspended registration. During the traffic stop, police say they made contact with 29-year-old Jamisa A. Mclvor from East Stroudsburg who had an expired and suspended driver's license. Upon asking her to step out of the vehicle officers say Mclvor fled from the traffic stop leading officers on a high-speed chase. Body recovered in Monroe County lake Police note the chase had to be terminated due to unsafe conditions. Officials state a felony warrant has been issued for Mclvor's arrest.

Body recovered in Monroe County lake

COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)— Officials say they have located the body of the man who went missing Saturday afternoon. According to Chief George Dobson with the Coolbaugh Township Fire Department, a man went missing in Dresser Lake after his kayak went under the water. Crews fight second-alarm fire in Northumberland County Chief Dobson said fire crews, dive teams, search and rescue teams, and drone operators were called in from three counties to assist with the search efforts. Officials say first responders located the missing man's body a few hours into the search through the use of penetrating sonar about 20-30 feet from the shortline. The victim has been identified at this time but their identity is being withheld pending notification of the family.

CHESTNUTHILL TOWNSHIP: Three Weeks before the West End Fair, a couple of Volunteers were discussing with the director of the West End Food Pantry (WEFP), Karena Thek, what to do with the two (2) Beverage Coolers to make them stand out. They discussed using contact paper on the sides and adding the West End Food Pantry Logo. The two Volunteers had the idea to reach out to Bay Image of Brodheadsville to see if they would consider donating vinyl wraps for the coolers. The ask was for a very Basic Wrap consisting of a light gray background, with the WEFP Logo on the top portion and Bay Image's Logo on the bottom portion noting that they donated their services.

COOLBAUGH TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Officials state five dive teams are searching a lake in Monroe County for a missing man. According to Monroe County Communcation Center dive teams in Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, Pike and Monroe County were called to Dresser Lake for reports of a man in the water. Crews fight second-alarm fire in Northumberland County Officals note this happened around 12:30 p.m. Eyewitness News will keep you updated as more information becomes available to us.

Traffic Safety Grants Awarded This week, the state provided nearly $36 million in grants that will be used to relieve traffic in 77 Pennsylvania municipalities through traffic signal upgrades and measures to increase safety and mobility. I am pleased to announce two municipalities in the 40th district were recipients totaling $685,566. Blakely Borough received $472,479 to update signal equipment at Ridge Road & Keystone Ave and Main St. & Keystone Ave. Olyphant Borough received $213,087 to update signal equipment at Lackawanna Ave & River Street and at South Valley Ave & Garfield Ave.

Woman allegedly found intoxicated at Camelback assaults EMS, officers

MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — A woman is being charged after police say she was found unconscious at Camelback Lodge and then began assaulting, staff, EMS, and officers. According to the Pocono Township Police Department, on August 13 around 10:00 p.m., officers were called to the Camelback Lodge for an intoxicated woman found unconscious in the water park who was trying to fight employees when she awoke. Owners of reptile store charged with 284 counts of animal neglect On the scene, police said they found 49-year-old Joanne Reily of Bath, who was extremely intoxicated and uncooperative with officers, security, and EMS. Reily was then placed under arrest and transported to Lehigh Valley Pocono Medical Center to be evaluated.

Smokey skies as firefighters battle fire at medical supplies center

TOBYHANNA TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — Firefighters from three counties are fighting a major fire at a medical supplies manufacturer in the Poconos. Crews are on the scene of a fire located along Commerce Boulevard at Medline Industries in Tobyhanna Township where they tell 28/22 News that the fire is believed to be in the middle of the building.

Pocono Township First In Monroe County To Try Microsurfacing

As paving is becoming more expensive, a Monroe County municipality is looking to save money by trying out a different process to fix its roads. Pocono Township is the first in the area to try out microsurfacing. A preventative maintenance sealing treatment that’s used to extend the life of blacktop roadways is making its debut today in Pocono Township on Laurel Lake Road. It’s called microsurfacing, an alternative to tar and chip.  Pocono Township Commissioners Vice President Jerrod Belvin says, "The good thing is not everybody gets stones on their car or tar up in their wheel wells and the neighbors don’t get all the chips blown on to their driveway anymore." Not only are drivers known to like it better but it’s considered safer by having better traction.

AG: Woman straw purchases 30 guns, weapons for felon boyfriend

EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — Attorney General announced the arrests of two Monroe County residents for an alleged straw purchasing operation that involved a woman buying guns for her boyfriend, a convicted felon. According to Attorney General Michelle Henry, Melissa Saldana and Ramon Roldan, Jr., both age 39, are charged with numerous violations of the Uniform Firearms Act, and false swearing. An investigation by the Office of the Attorney General discovered Saldana repeatedly bought firearms for her boyfriend, Roldan, who was prohibited from having firearms due to multiple felony convictions.
