Iconic sign coming down in Pocono Township

POCONO TOWNSHIP, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — An iconic welcome sign in the Poconos is coming down. 28/22 News was there Monday morning as crews started removing the sign at the intersection of Routes 715 and 611 in Tannersville. This is all to widen the road. The plan is expected to ease congestion in the area by cutting 40 feet through the mountain behind it. Saying goodbye to more than 40-year-old Pocono Township sign The man who built the sign in the 80s, and painted the restaurants and businesses showcased on it, knows the sign is cherished by many in the Poconos. "When you see that sign, especially when you come home from a long trip you see that sign pull into town and you feel home," said Tannersville resident Tucker Reinhardt.

East Stroudsburg Tax Turmoil: Residents Demand Accountability as Bills Soar

East Stroudsburg residents are voicing their frustration after the Borough Council approved a 29% property tax hike at their December 17, 2024, meeting. Concerned citizens argue that the council has failed to explore viable alternatives before placing the financial burden squarely on the shoulders of taxpayers.Lack of Alternatives or Due DiligenceResidents allege that the council made no meaningful attempt to reduce costs or generate revenue by other means. Despite billions of dollars in tax-exempt properties in the borough—including for-profit hospitals, East Stroudsburg University, and vacant corporate buildings—the council has not pursued legal action to reassess these entities' tax status. Similar lawsuits in Pennsylvania have proven successful, with courts ruling that some so-called "nonprofit" entities were actually operating for profit and should contribute their fair share of property taxes.

A Methodist Mennonite

A Methodist MennoniteMy Wesleyan Methodist family was loving and supportive, even as I rejected the church as a teenager. I had a profound religious experience the summer before college. While at college, I discovered one could have a strong faith and pursue serious intellectual questions. I was challenged to read the Sermon on the Mount in a new way. In 1969 I became a draft resister. A friend and spiritual mentor suggested I attend a gathering of evangelical writers and leaders at Buck Hill Falls, Pa. There I met several young Mennonite leaders, including Art Smoker, Walt Hackman and Roy Yoder. We quickly bonded. I was delighted to learn about Anabaptism as a faith tradition.
